RPGaDAY2015: Favorite Media You Wish Was An RPG

My answer is something inspired by the Silent Hill series. Namely the second and third games, though I liked some of the stuff from The Room and most of P.T (shame they aren't going to finish it, though Allison Road looks promising).

Ideally it wouldn't assume the modern day, or at least not be locked into it. It would also be nice if it didn't try to shoehorn Pyramid Head and nurses into everything.

My initial thoughts are that it would be appropriate for one-shots or short campaigns. You start the first session by asking players about various traumatic experiences their characters have had, and use the answers to create the various monsters and environments.

Then it's up to the characters to try and escape, either before dying or some ritual is completed, put a stop to whoever is trying to complete said ritual, or kill whoever is generating the Otherworld/monsters. I could see working in Fright Night's climax counter with Otherworld manifestations/ritual completion (each time you progress to Act II and III, it triggers are crossing for a period of time).

I think the hardest part would be making thematic/interesting puzzles, especially if you're doing so on the fly.
